My wife is itching to get another convertible and I’m always down for new cars . Couple of sort of requirements
- I want to spend around $5k. Can stretch that a little if needed
- Back seat would be nice to have (we have 2 little girls) but not mandatory, this will be car #5 (or #6 if i can weasel my way out of selling one)
- needs to be moderately quick.
- reliability is not a big deal, I have plenty of time to work on it, as long as parts are not outrageous. As long as its running more often than not
current contenders are
- 986 boxster (we’ve had 2 and loved them)
- 1 series (can’t decide between 128 and 135...128 with a few mods will be quick enough for our purposes. currently have an n54 so i know the motor inside and out, but also sick of working on it 3 years) or e92 3 series (whatever the model code is)
- miata! Not sure wife would want an NA, too old, but NB seems right in the pocket. (but also she wants/is ok w/ Z3...so maybe NA?)
- 3rd gen mr2 except its supposedly dog shit slow? or maybe. wait for it. find one of the sw20 convertibles to import?!?!?!
- help me find some weird shit to buy pls

I enjoyed both my 128i and 328i, albeit in coupe form. I went with the N52 so I didn’t have to deal with the N54/N55. I had the M3 for when I wanted to go faster.

yeah i have an m5 that is staying, so that was kind of my thought. do the DISA intake upgrade and 1 or 2 other things, n52 gets quick enough...

People shit on Nissan for making boring cars, but look what happened when they didn't. We mocked them. I would never buy one of these, but it is awesome. If I had to cross country road trip, this would be choice number 1.

You can get a fairly nice E36 or E46 for that price.
I wouldn't think the 128/135 would be that cheap? But I don't really know.

Paid a little more than t wice your budget but bought an M Roadster a month ago. No regrets. Looks like the perfect answer for you other than the budget issue.

Depends on the buffeting and noise at 85mph with the top up and windows down.

I heartily endorse cheap convertibles. We NEEDED a 4-seat convertible in spring and picked up this 1998 SAAB for $2500. Another $1500 or so between me and my SAAB mechanic and it’s pretty well sorted. AC even works.
Not saying it’s what you’re looking for, but comfy and not slow. That little 2.0T is pretty quick by 1998 standards. I’ve logged over 5000 miles since may.
